The quick orientation
Newburgh is in Warrick County, about a 15-minute drive from downtown Evansville along the Lloyd Expressway. The town center sits on a bluff above the Ohio River — historic Main Street runs parallel to the water with shops, restaurants, and a public square that hosts festivals all summer.
Newburgh has roughly 3,500 people in the official town and 35,000+ in the broader Newburgh census area. The vibe is upscale-quaint: a lot of families, a lot of weekend foot traffic on Main Street, and a noticeably slower pace than Evansville. If you've ever wandered Madison, Indiana or Galena, Illinois, you'll feel right at home here.
What to do
Walk Historic Main Street
Pop into antique shops, women's boutiques, and home stores. Grab pastries at Ross's Bakery, coffee at The Pour Haus or Edgewater Grille's patio. The whole stretch is walkable in 30 minutes if you don't stop, but you'll stop.
Newburgh Lock & Dam / Old Lock Park
The Newburgh Lock & Dam is just downstream from town — a great spot to watch barges work through the lock and see the river up close. Adjacent Old Lock Park has playgrounds and a small history center explaining the river's role in the town's 19th-century growth.
Friedman Park
A 175-acre regional park about a mile from town — paved trails, a stocked fishing lake, a kayak launch, dog park, splash pad, large playground, and an amphitheater that hosts free summer concerts. Locals use it like a backyard.
Warrick Trails
Newburgh anchors one end of the Warrick Trails system, a paved multi-use trail network connecting parks, schools, and neighborhoods. Excellent for biking, running, or pushing a stroller. Several of our Newburgh properties (including Barn in the Burgh) are directly on the trail.
Where to eat & drink
- Edgewater Grille — riverfront dining with one of the best patios in the area. Sunday brunch is the move.
- Knob Hill Tavern — historic spot just north of town, known for steaks and a vintage tavern feel.
- Sweetwater Café — beloved breakfast/brunch spot with consistently great pancakes.
- Sportsman's Grille & Billiards — casual, kid-friendly, fish sandwich is a local fixture.
- The Pour Haus — coffee, wine, charcuterie on Main Street; a perfect afternoon stop.
- Ross's Bakery — turnovers, doughnuts, fresh bread. Cash works fastest.
Annual events
- Newburgh NewburghFunFest (early September) — long-running riverfront festival with live music, carnival rides, food trucks, and a fireworks finale.
- Newburgh Wine Walk & Sippin' on Main — periodic Saturday events where Main Street shops pour for ticketed walkers.
- Christmas in Newburgh (early December) — luminaria, a parade, lit storefronts, and gallery walks. A small-town Christmas in the truest sense.
Hospital visits — Deaconess Gateway
Deaconess Gateway Hospital sits on the Newburgh side just off the Lloyd Expressway. It's a major regional facility with a heart hospital, women's hospital, and trauma center. Our Newburgh properties — particularly our RiverTown Retro 1990s and Barn in the Burgh — are within 10 minutes of Gateway, and we host extended-stay guests there frequently. Why Newburgh for an event
The Barn in the Burgh, our 12-sleeper barndominium, doubles as a daytime event venue with capacity for up to 80 guests. It's been used for birthday parties, baby showers, bridal showers, anniversary celebrations, and small family reunions. The setting — country-quiet, a working barn aesthetic, on the Warrick Trails — is unlike anywhere else in the area. See the Barn events page for details and pricing.
